Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Spa Resort

Conference venue DrakensbergI recently had the pleasure of being invited to an educational site inspection at one of The Goodersons properties in the Drakensberg, Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Spa Resort.

The last time I went there was probably 5 or 6 years ago and I was pleased to see that maintenance has been kept up at the resort. The rooms we stayed in were large family style self-catering apartments and they had been recently refurbished in both hard finishes and soft finishes.

These self-catering units are very pleasant with satellite TV, en suit bathroom, kitchenette with full self-catering facilities. They are suitable for both leisure guests on holiday or for conference groups. Because each unit has two separate en suite bedrooms conference delegates can lock their door between their unit and the shared lounge area resulting in two separate rooms. But if it is leisure that you are after, then the units are large and very comfortable. Each unit has a deck off the lounge area with beautiful views of the mountains.

The facilities at Drakensberg Gardens are also plentiful and we enjoyed some tennis, a play area for kids, pony rides and numerous walks into the hills. The benefits of these activities for leisure guests obviously speak for themselves and kids can be kept entertained for hours on end taking part in outdoor activities that they probably don’t get exposure to at home. A bit of fresh berg air and some exercise goes a long way in forgetting the TV. But for the rainy day there is DSTV to keep everyone entertained.

For your conference groups these outdoor activities can come in handy if you plan to do some team building or just some light-hearted interactive activities with your group. Often budget does not allow for a full-blown team building programme and the activities available here can be mixed and matched to create a fun-filled day for your conference group without the cost of bringing in a professional team building company. Should you require a team building company though, there is plenty of space and options for them to build a programme for you at Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Spa Resort.

The existing conference venues that I remember from my last visit there have all been maintained to 3 star standards and offer a wide variety of choices in terms of plenary and breakaway rooms. The addition of the new conference venue Mashai is also welcomed giving your group a wider choice now of rooms for your conference delegates. So with a total of two conference rooms and a boardroom seating a maximum of 180 pax in the Rhino room the venue lends itself nicely to mid-sized groups. The accommodation available matches the numbers that can be seated in conference and if need be spill over accommodation can be outsourced to the time share on site.

There is a Wellness Centre on site consisting of a sauna and plunge pool, two Jacuzzis, two steam rooms, a 24 jet hydrotherapy bath (heated) as well as a fully equipped gym with cardiovascular circuit, weight training and juice bar. The Wellness Centre also includes Cellu-Beauty Wellness Retreat, which offers 5 treatment rooms (booking is essential).

For the golfing enthusiast, the Resort prides itself in the renowned Drakensberg Gardens Golf Club, the only 18-hole golf course in the Southern Berg (NGU affiliated). Known to be challenging but fair, the course is ideal for all golfers from seasoned professionals to the first time player.

So if it’s leisure or conferencing you are after give Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Spa Resort a try, you won’t regret it.

Good Luck!

Some facts …

POST AND PRE CONFERENCE TOURS – KZN

Duma Zulu is an ideal venue for pre or post international conference tours preceding or following conventions or conferences being hosted in Durban at the International Convention Centre, or any of the larger hotels. Approximately 3.5 hour’s drive from Durban to Hluhluwe, the closest town to the venue.

Hluhluwe Game Reserve is, of course where all of the Big-5 will be found and trips to this large Game Reserve can be easily undertaken in a day. Make Duma Zulu your base to visit all the local attractions i.e. the Game Reserves, arts and crafts stalls, the wonderful coast line at Sodwana Bay where you may arrange a day of diving in the coral reefs. At Sodwana, for the Padi Divers among you, Coral Divers is a PADI 5 star Gold Palm IDC Centre and a National Geographic Dive Centre situated a short drive from Duma Zulu.

DumaZulu – translated as “thundering Zulu” – offers a variety of unforgettable experiences both for those staying as guests and visitors from destinations that are further away. In addition to experiencing local traditions and dance whilst visiting their onsite Zulu village and cultural museum, the lodge offers the option of providing guests with a two to three day stay that is jam packed with a wide variety of activities. While many families simply enjoy relaxing next to the pool in the warm Zululand sunshine, the more energetic and adventurous can book game drives, elephant and cheetah interactions and more with the Lodge’s reception staff.

What makes DumaZulu truly unique are the 21 rounded ethnic huts which comprise the accommodation rooms at the Lodge. These are arranged in a circle around a central cattle kraal in true Zulu tradition. Exteriors are designed to reflect the different tribes of Southern Africa – Zulu, Swazi, North Sotho, Xhosa, Venda, Tsonga and Ndebele as well as the introduction of a new Sangoma Hut for the Zulu Village. The lodge has received a complete renovation of its public rest rooms, new thatching, re-tiling of their bar and dining room and the clearing of the surrounding bush. This has certainly encouraged the viewing of some friendly game such as Red and Grey Duiker, Bush Buck, Mongoose, Crested Guinea fowls and Bush Babies.

DumaZulu has also proved a real bird lover’s paradise. If you listen carefully, you can hear pockets of sunbirds in the undergrowth. An added bonus is the resident large barn owl that has made the Lodge’s reception area its home. Visiting birds that can also be spotted include the spotted Blue Mantled Flycatcher, Yellow bellied Brown Bul, Yellow streaked Brown Bul, Dark-Backed Weaver, Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Trumpeter Hornbills, Crowned Hornbills, Grey Wax Bill and Eastern Nicator.

Of course, the most well known residents reside in the snake and croc park which houses the likes of a snouted cobra, pythons, black and green mambas, crocs and an albino Nile crocodile. Duma Zulu’s guide not only takes guests through the park but feeds the crocs and introduces the not so faint hearted to some of the friendlier reptiles. There is also a water feature housing some of the baby crocodiles at reception to welcome guests on their arrival. (Do not fear! They are well trained!)

Duma Zulu staff are also truly proud of their restaurant which is becoming well known for a traditional Zulu lunch that is served in an open thatched dining room with the likes of samp, beans and a variety of traditional foods on the menu. They have also introduced a staff choir under the watchful eye of the food and beverage manageress, Evidence Msezane, to entertain all diners.
Highlights during the past year have included a number of community projects. A pipeline has recently been laid between the Lodge’s borehole and the neighbouring Glenpark Primary school which has been without water for years. Management and staff are also in the throes of helping create vegetable gardens that will not only feed and provide an income for local people but may even help stock the lodge’s kitchen in the future.

New exciting additions that are coming soon include a Bird Park as well as a conference centre.
