Johannesburg, in Gauteng, is the largest city in South Africa and the most densely populated. It is the economic hub of the country and has the largest economy in Sub Saharan Africa and as such boasts the most conference venues in South Africa.

It is one of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the world and the world’s largest city not situated on a river, lake or coastline.

Jo’Burg, or Jozey as it has affectionately become known, enjoys a sub-tropical highland climate. In the summer months of October to April, late afternoon thunder showers are pretty much the order of the day, while the climate in general, remains somewhat dry and sunny. It is reported to be the ‘lightning capital of the world’ although this title is also claimed by other cities around the world. Despite experiencing a relatively dry climate Johannesburg has over 10 million trees making it the largest man-made forest in the world second only to Graskop in Mpumalanga. These trees were originally planted to provide wood for the mining industry in the mineral rich Witwatersrand area. They were retained as the northern suburbs grew and were even expanded with the encouragement of subsequent municipalities but recently deforestation has occurred to make way for redevelopment both commercially and residentially. This might cause some alarm as the oxygen producing trees have kept a reasonable balance in some of the smog ridden areas until now.
