A little History on conference venues in Pretoria and Pretoria as a city

PRETORIA was founded in 1855, by Marthinus Pretorius, a Voortrekker leader. He named what is now, a bustling metropolis after his father, Andries, who was instrumental in the Voortrekker victory over the Zulus in the monumental Battle of Blood River.

Today the area has been renamed the City of Tshwane, but the CBD still keeps the name of Pretoria (which continues to be the administrative capital of South Africa)
The Union Buildings, central to South African history now represent the change South Africa endured. While the city is a governmentally significant city, it is also alive with culture, housing museums, monuments, theatres, hotels and conference centres as well as being the hub of industry in the region.
Affectionately known as “Jacaranda City” because of the over 50 000 Jacaranda trees that line Pretoria’s streets and carpet the city in purple in October. The first Jacaranda trees were imported from Rio de Janeiro in 1888 and became Pretoria’s signature. It is alarming to hear that the Jacarandas are threatening to become extinct in Pretoria soon. One can’t imagine Pretoria without the purple sky-line and floor …

The general area is also home to many nature reserves, parks and gardens, including the National Botanical Gardens and many small parks scattered across this pretty city.

The rich history of the area is also captured within several museums within Pretoria, such as the Transvaal Museum, National Cultural History Museum and many solid, old buildings that have been preserved as gems of the past

As with many of South Africa’s conference venues, those in Pretoria are of a high standard, with custom-built venues designed to international specifications. Pretoria, being centrally located as it is, is very popular as a conference, seminar and congress destination.

Central to the Midrand, Irene and further afield, one need look no further than the multitude of conference venues available from small intimate venues to the large, top-class hotels and conference centres in and around Pretoria.
Some venues, perhaps un-tried and certainly worth considering are:

The Owl’s Nest Wedding & Conference Centre (Rayton Conference Venues)

Set in the natural bush of the area, in the rolling hills of the Maghaliesberg, with a serene country ambience, The Owl’s Nest Wedding and Conference Centre provides professionalism plus a home-from-home atmosphere for delegates in conference.

Diep in die Berg Conference and Function Centre (Wapadrand Conference Venues)

The renowned Diep in die Berg Conference Centre is the ideal facility for the out-of-the-office conference, training or Bosberaad. Their all-purpose conference centre offers 7 conference rooms which can accommodate up to a maximum of 450 delegates.

PROTEA HOTELS offer a variety of venues throughout the area including Pretoria, and Midrand, all of which have a standard to uphold and are therefore reliable, consistently good with excellent service.

At Irene there is IRENE COUNTRY LODGE and LERIBA LODGE AND SPA at Centurion. The latter has, in recent times been thoroughly refurbished to a fine standard.

Building Strong Customer Relationships is Vital for your Company’s Survival

Building strong relationships with clients has never been more important and is getting more and more difficult every day. Research shows that the point where you now make contact with a client is moving further and further down the sales funnel. The nature of customer relationships has changed dramatically. This is mostly because consumers interact differently with brands through ubiquitous technology like social media and mobile devices. The way you connect with your customers need to be just as dynamic in order to stay alive.

Your network of contacts is your lifeline. Grow your network constantly with business colleagues, professional acquaintances, prospective and existing customers, partners, suppliers, contractors and association members, as well as family, friends and people you meet at school, church and in your community. But remember to also segment your lists. When communication with your clients is personalised, it creates a whole new dynamic.

Relationships need to be taken care of just like you take care of a little baby. It needs constant and early attention. You can’t expect someone to remember you a year later after a once off introduction. When you meet someone at a networking event immediately make contact to strengthen that relationship. Send a “great to meet you” email. Follow up with an email to reinforce who you are and what your company does. Send them an email to tell them that you have added them to the company newsletter.

Be authentic with your customers. Make sure your company has a voice and owns that voice. Be genuine and be yourself. Deep, authentic passion, clear vision and great communication skills will build stronger and more trusting relationships with people, and will engage them better. Be a partner, not just a service provider. Make sure you understand your client’s business on the inside and out.

Build your reputation as an expert by giving away some free insight. Having a blog site is a great way of doing this. Create content that your customers will want to read. When you send out newsletters don’t just sell, sell, sell. Today’s customers want to be engaged on a different level. Speak your customer’s language. Find out what is important to your customers and write about that. This will make you a thought leader and will build loyalty and trust.

“Don’t promise what you can’t deliver, and deliver everything you promise.” – Richard Branson
Trust is the glue that holds relationships together. Your customers and clients need to trust you. Trust is built by continuously and consistently doing what you said you would do. When you tell a customer you’ll call them back, do it. When you promise to follow-up, do it. Always be transparent in your business.

Reward loyal customers. As relationships develop, customers should always be ascending within your business. Introduce various levels of customer loyalty and have perks associated with each new level. Educate new customers about your loyalty programmes and show them what a loyal customer looks like. Show customer testimonials as often as you can. This also makes for great content for your blog posts, social media, and newsletters.

Top 10 Things to Consider When Selecting a Conference Venue

The venue has a direct impact on the success of any function. If you have the right venue, you’re more than half way there. So if you’re hosting a conference, the biggest decision you’ll have to make, is where to host it. The team at Kievits Kroon Country Estate has vast experience with hosting all sorts of conferences, meetings and events and offers the following advice when choosing a venue:

• Accessibility
Make sure that the venue is easily accessible for all delegates, taking into consideration that they may have to negotiate rush hour traffic to get there. If it’s difficult to find or too far off the beaten track, you may find that your delegates are late or arrive harassed and irritable, which is not a great way to start a conference.

• Parking
Secure parking should be readily available for all delegates arriving in their own vehicles. Also check that there is coach parking, if you are providing transport, and that it is close to the venue.

• Peace and tranquility
A venue which is away from the bustle of the city will help to promote more creative and productive thinking. Being cooped up in a windowless room all day with no access to fresh air is not conducive to a receptive audience. Some out of town venues also offer the option of alfresco dining and outdoor team building events.

• The right size venue & break-away rooms
Ensure that the size of the conference room suits the number of delegates and your required seating arrangement. Don’t be tempted to force people to sit theatre style when they need to take notes and want to use laptops and iPads. Likewise, a conference room that is too big for the number of delegates will lose the intimacy required for interaction and sharing of ideas. If you are going to divide delegates into smaller groups for brainstorming sessions or smaller presentations, make sure that there are suitable break-away rooms close to the main venue. The ideal venue is one which offers a variety of different sized conference rooms.

• Catering
There’s nothing worse than breaking for tea and finding a tray of limp, soggy sandwiches and wilted lettuce in the hallway, or being served a stodgy heavy meal at lunch time. Choose a venue that is known for supplying fresh, healthy food so that delegates return after the break feeling refreshed and ready for work again, not overfed and lethargic. The catering at the venue should also be able to meet the special dietary requirements for your delegates, including vegetarian, Kosher and Halaal meals.

• Professional staff
Setting up a conference can be stressful and tiring but if you choose a venue which has professional support personnel , they will assist to make your company conference a slick, impeccable, successful event. The right staff can help with everything from check lists, menu selection and agenda setting to entertainment and team building.

• Equipment
These days high-speed Wi-Fi at the venue is a priority, as is good audio-visual equipment. If your event requires more than the standard data projectors, screens and white boards, ensure that the venue is able to hire specialised technical equipment for you.

• Good accommodation and facilities

Unless your conference is a one day event, you will need to provide comfortable accommodation for delegates. Ensure that the venue has the sufficient number of bedrooms and that where delegates are required to share, for budget purposes, twin beds are supplied. Your delegates will want to relax and unwind after a day’s conferencing, so choose a venue with an hospitable bar, a good restaurant, and possibly a spa with facilities like a sauna and Jacuzzi.

• Wheelchair friendly
It goes without saying that the venue should cater for disabled delegates and have easy wheelchair access to the conference and breakaway rooms, accommodation, bars and facilities.

• Budget
Ensure that all items are taken into account when budgeting for your conference so that when the final bill is presented you do not receive any nasty shocks. It’s a good idea to limit bar expenditure so that delegates pay for their own alcoholic drinks. Some venues offer all-inclusive conference packages which make budgeting much simpler.

Kievits Kroon’s state-of-the-art conference facilities, fully equipped Business Centre, delicious cuisine and professional support personnel will make your company conference a slick, impeccable, successful event.
