Conference venues in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, Egoli (City of Gold), is the largest city in South Africa, situated in the general Gauteng area or what was in years gone by known as the Transvaal … meaning one side of the Vaal River. It is the most densely populated city in this region and in the entire country. Being the economic hub of the country, it has the largest economy in Sub Saharan Africa, is one of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the world and is the world’s largest city which is not situated on a river or at the coast. It makes sense, due to its size, economy and population that Johannesburg boasts the most conference venues in South Africa.

With two airports, OR Tambo International being the larger of the two and the largest and busiest in South Africa, with flights arriving and departing every minute of the day and evening to other local cities, to Europe and the rest of the world, Johannesburg is a very suitable choice of city if it’s business, conferences, conventions or seminars you are planning. First World in standards and operations, convenient, efficient, organised with everything close at hand considering how effortless and quick it is to commute to and from the airport wherever in the city and surrounds you are.

Airport transfers are available and affordable and many hotel venues in Johannesburg offer a complimentary shuttle service to guests. For national conferences, where delegates are commuting from other major cities in South Africa, Johannesburg remains a popular destination due to its accessibility and availability of services. Air flights, being frequent and cost-effective delegates often travel to Johannesburg for the day from other local cities to attend conferences in Johannesburg. Hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is also plentiful and delegates who wish to stay over can find a room easily. Accommodation ranges from 5 star properties to the more budget friendly establishments.

Johannesburg, while in the Highlands, enjoys a sub-tropical climate. The summer months of October to April bring late afternoon thunder showers while the climate remains somewhat dry and sunny. It has been reported as the lightning capital of the world although this title is also claimed by other cities around the world. Winters are cold and dry, with occasional snow falls although these are infrequent. Temperatures in winter might drop to minus 2 or 3. Despite experiencing a relatively dry climate Johannesburg has over 10 million trees making it the largest man-made forest in the world second only to Graskop in Mpumalanga. These trees were originally planted to provide wood for the mining industry in the mineral rich Witwatersrand area.

Conference venues in Johannesburg range from small boutique hotels and guest houses to larger dedicated convention centers and conference venues forming part of the larger hotels. Most are well priced and offer a wide range of menus and facilities of a world-class standard.

There are several top-class hotels which are situated at or very near to OR Tambo International Airport allowing delegates and business travellers to move between the airport and their hotels inexpensively and with ease with free shuttle services offered by most of these.

In the CBD there are some very large conference venues while on the outskirts one can find some very quaint and more intimate establishments.

Johannesburg is a gateway to other regions in the Gauteng province such as Muldersdrift, Magaliesburg, Rustenburg, Centurion, Irene and Pretoria. These outlying areas have become much sought after to capture the ambience and peace of the country and in each area, there are many hotels and guest houses offering 3, 4, and 5-star standards and facilities. Popular conference venues in the greater Johannesburg region include areas such as Midrand, Fourways, Randburg, Randfontein, Houghton, Sandton and the East Rand and Southern Suburbs.

The four largest conference venues in Johannesburg are Sandton Convention Center, situated in Sandton, Africa’s top class shopping and business center, Gallagher Estate, situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria, The Coca Cola Dome, the fourth largest such structure in the world, and MTN Expo Center, Nasrec, the city’s biggest venue and not far from Soweto. These venues can each host thousands of delegates and abound with facilities and services to cater for all types of conferences and events.
