Stellenbosch, the town, situated on the banks of the Eerste Rivier, was founded by Simon van der Stel, the Governor of the Cape Colony in 1679. The town expanded quickly and became an independent local authority in 1682.

In the heart of the Cape Winelands region, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek are some of the main wine making regions in South Africa.

With it’s comfortable Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and cool wet winters, Stellenbosch is an ideal situation for growing grapes, most of which are used in wine production.

WHAT’S ON in Stellenbosch


The annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival has become world-renowned and an extremely popular stop on the Winelands Tour for international and local visitors. Many packaged features of this festival include the opportunity to taste in excess of 500 different wines and these tastings are usually accompanied by cooking competitions where some of South Africa’s top chefs produce mouth-watering delights for guests to sample or thoroughly indulge in.

For the more adventurous and outdoor lovers, visit the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve or Dellrust Wine Estate who offer Quad biking quite aside from their wine tour.

Stellenbosch is an easy 35 kilometre drive from Cape Town airport and if transport is a challenge for the international conference delegate, there are many car rental companies located at the airport, or the popular ‘Point-To-Point’ service offered by Avis. Many hotels will also offer a shuttle service for guests who do not plan to travel while attending a conference in Stellenbosch.

The Western Cape Province has much to offer visitors, both local and international.
